We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. – Romans 6:4
Baptism is a symbolic act to publicly profess your salvation. When we as believers are baptized, we are submerged completely under water to identify with the death and burial of Jesus Christ, and when we are raised back out of the water, we then identify with His resurrection.
