Robert with his sons When Ted was 16, I went to Germany. I bought a Volkswagen for the family and I spent a month or more driving around, and I did the whole trip on five dollars a day. I was looking forward going back home. I stopped in France too and saw those cave paintings of thousands of years ago. The car was shipped over from Brussels, while I flew. Of course I was happy to be home. When I was in Princeton, I went out of my way to show the boys the arts and highlights of New York. There were some problems in changing the schools from Pasadena to Princeton.
They were very good students. I often had lectures and could not be there in the mornings. I did not eat in the Athenaeum at that time and I would either come home or go to Chandler Dining Hall. As soon as I could, I would go home to do my homework. I did not have an office in our home, but I had some space that I used as an office. I would be playing with the children and help them do their homework and put them to bed, and then do my own work. I built a swimming pool for them but it turned out by the time the pool was finished, they were 16 and they could drive and all they wanted was to drive off to the beach with girls.
She taught us a game she called “Chinese badminton” in which you have a little feathered shuttlecock that you kept in the air by kicking with your heel in various ways. There was also a young lady who appeared there — I don’t think she was a student — her name was, I believe, Muleika Barklay, and she was involved with one of the graduate students.
